Is Now the Perfect Time to Renew My Wireless Contract?

Renewing my wireless plan has always felt like more of a sport to me then a routine task that comes along every 3 years or less.  The name of the game is don’t get screwed by your wireless provider and try to squeeze as many features and services out of them as possible.  My track record speaks for itself.  Three years ago I negotiated what I thought was a tremendous deal from Rogers.  Sure I had to call several times over the course of many weeks and speak to half a dozen sales reps, but the folks in retention finally came through with a great offer, as they always do.

Here’s what I got:
250 daytime minutes, unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 6pm, unlimited incoming calls, free Rogers to Rogers calling, 2,500 text messages, voice mail, call display, and all that jazz for a grand total of $27 before taxes.

The one feature I was unwilling to add at that point in time was data.  Remember that 3 years ago the iphone was the most advanced Smartphone on the market (some might argue it still is) and showing off your Blackberry was still considered cool amongst teens.

The mobile landscape today is vastly different then October of 2008 and perhaps best described as a hyper competitive battlefield of Android vs. iOS.

I’m finally ready to add a data plan and join the ever connected world of mobile communications, so I too can update my status on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn while eating, sleeping, working, playing, and driving (just kidding, that ain’t safe).

These days I’m more interesting in getting my hands on the newest and best gadgets and less inspired to milk my wireless provider for all their worth. Having said all this I’d like to know what type of offers competing telecom companies are offering to keep their existing clientele happy.  Please feel free to share your thoughts and feedback in the comments section.

Thanks!

Flash Support Finally Coming to the iPhone and iPad?

If the iPhone and iPad had a single and inexcusable fault it the eyes of tech aficionados, it would probably be their lack of support for Flash media content.  Well, it took 4 long years, but it seems like Adobe has finally addressed the issue that will bring Flash support and smiles to Apple fans everywhere.

The IBC 2011 Conference and Exhibition was the site where Adobe announced the upcoming release of two new software solutions, including Adobe Flash Media server 4.5 and Flash Access 3.0.

“Adobe has a deep heritage in providing video solutions for delivering content online and on-device. With Flash Media Server 4.5 and Flash Access 3.0, we’re enabling businesses to reach more customers and more devices, helping them increase the impact of video experiences, enhance their brands and ultimately, drive business success,” said Pritham Shetty, vice president, Video Solutions, Adobe.

How does this announcement impact your buying decision when it comes to replacing your current Smartphone/Tablet?

Steve Jobs Resigns From Apple

Steve Job’s resignation letter:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community: I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Canadian release date delayed…again!

Have you anxiously been waiting for Samsung to release its Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Canada?  Well, be prepared to wait a little while longer, as Future Shop is now taking pre-orders for an estimated release date of September 9, 2011.  The popular tablet making waves around the tech world and quickly taking claim to the title “iPad killer”, had its most recent launch date scheduled for this Friday.

Not quite sure what the reason behind this setback is, however, Apple recently had a court injunction temporarily delay the launch of the device in Europe.

Blackberry Losing Ground as Android Dominates U.S. Smartphone Sales in Q2

Earlier today The NPD Group released Q2 results for U.S. Smartphone sales and without surprise, leading the pack with 52% of market share was Google’s Android operating system.  Perhaps even less surprising was the further decline of RIM’s Blackberry OS, which saw its market share erode to just 11%.  The once might Canadian company is hoping to repeat success with the launch of 3 new Smartphone’s powered by the new Blackberry 7 OS.

Windows Phone 7, Windows Mobile, and webOS took less than 5% each as Apple’s iOS rounds off the top list with 29%

HP TouchPad Instock at this Best Buy Location?

Best Buy website, August 21st 9:00AM
After news dropped Friday that HP was discontinuing production of their TouchPad tablet, eager tech enthusiasts (myself included) hit the streets in search for bargain prices at local Best Buy stores.  To our dismay, inventory of the once abundant device appeared all but sold out chain wide, except for one store in Leaside allegedly claiming to be in stock!...

Leaside Best Buy store, 30 minutes before opening

An initial gathering of 30 people quickly turned to a mob of 100 anxious customers waiting to get their hands on the HP TouchPad.

5 minutes before opening
With anticipation building, associates of this Best Buy location wasted no time before crushing the last remaining hopes of the faithful.  "We are sold out!" was the message delivered just minutes before doors opened at 11.  Apparently, the "in stock" status on Best Buy's website had not been updated with the current inventory, which was none, thus creating a frenzy on this Sunday morning and all but crushing any last remaining hopes that a $99 HP TouchPad tablet could be found.
